Coverage gaps

Dental, vision & hearing — where VA helps and where it doesn't

Original Medicare wasn't built for routine dental, vision, or hearing care. VA fills part of the gap for enrolled veterans, and a Medicare Advantage plan can fill the rest if you want broader access to community providers.

Dental

Through VA

VA dental is limited to specific eligibility — service‑connected dental conditions, 100% disabled veterans, former POWs, and a few other categories. The VA Dental Insurance Program (VADIP) lets other enrolled veterans buy private dental insurance at group rates.

Original Medicare

Original Medicare generally does not cover routine dental care, cleanings, fillings, dentures, or most extractions.

What can fill the gap

Many veteran‑focused Medicare Advantage plans include dental — preventive cleanings and exams, plus a yearly allowance toward fillings, crowns, and dentures. Coverage levels and annual maximums vary widely by plan and ZIP.

Vision

Through VA

Routine eye exams and basic eyewear are covered for many enrolled veterans through VA, depending on priority group and clinical need.

Original Medicare

Original Medicare generally does not cover routine eye exams or eyeglasses, with limited exceptions for medical conditions like cataract surgery.

What can fill the gap

Most Medicare Advantage plans include an annual routine eye exam and a frame/lens or contact‑lens allowance.

Hearing

Through VA

VA covers hearing exams and hearing aids for enrolled veterans when clinically indicated — one of the strongest VA benefits in this category.

Original Medicare

Original Medicare generally does not cover hearing aids or routine hearing exams.

What can fill the gap

Most Medicare Advantage plans include a hearing exam plus a hearing aid allowance, useful as a backup or for veterans who prefer a community provider.
